Huat LIM together with Susanne Zeidler has been awarded the 2007 Barbara Cappochin Foundation Award for their BOH Visitor Centre a building located in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The award is in recognition of the Detailed Architectural and Construction Elements for the building. Memory sculpture by Italian artist Pino Castagna is also to be presented in connection to this award, the event to take place in Padua Italy in October 2007.

We thought to finally compare brownie versus whitey! The original powder-coated aluminium louvred facade is now being reconsidered. We’d rather a soft white [or maybe pink] laminated film on glass for simplicity and elegance on avenueK’s 170m long facde, not withstanding the fact that we have external lighting to contend with and retailers just can’t get enough advertising space anywhere they go, so we felt ‘obligated’. Somehow.

There was a time when we held the view [to this day] that avenueK ought to be an all-white scheme, and so here it is. And the columns, now that they are NOT white we take the view a revision is on its way to carry the snowy theme more faithfully. The black columns were there in the first place to carry the podium together with a black floor along the entire length of the pedestrian walk.

One of the major decisions we’ve had to make was to retain the escalator that went from ground level up to what is now called the mezzanine floor. The 40 ft long escalator became iconic in its own right, presenting itself immediately as a visual element that held the atrium on one end, and also acted as a sculptural anchor for incoming visitor traffic. The escalator is one of three elements that compose the atrium, the other two being the wall, and the third, which pulls the eye up to the upper levels is the balcony, visible in this image.

Long before we proceeded to talk about projecting images on to this wall, there was a view that we used it to reflect ambient light, coming off form underside of the balcony on level 4 and the black perforated aluminium ceiling. The black slot you see on the ceiling is made out to support lighting fixtures at some future date, and also serve to extract air in case of fire. The black ceiling which is really RAL 7038 code has been constructed with tender loving care by Shinwa Metals of Malaysia based on details prepared by zlgdesign.

Here’s an image prepared by huatlim for the roof terrace of the podium of avenuek, going back 4 years. The sketch shows the relationship between the residential tower KResidence, to the glass roof, which now remains to be examined for daylight penetration into the retail floors.

Balcony view of the atrium, with the Putra LRT Station entrance showing up at the bottom of the atrium wall. At this time the atrium wall has already been revised to allow visual porosity into the stores beyond it. The fial is yet to be built, with two layers of polycarbonate panels in front and backlighting system in between.

This is a detail view of the current state of construction for the Residential tower KResidence, showing the close resemblance to our original sketch and thereafter 3d modelling of the facade back three years ago. We’ve developed 19 different plan types inside of K Residence, for which we’ve collaborated with Christian Liaigre, Ann Li Koh [Perception Design HK] and Yasumichi Morita of Glamorous Ltd Japan. The construction documents for K Residence was developed by zlgdesign.

What you see on the floor is white terrazzo, a deliciously delicate creamy colour we thought would give a floor the luminosity it required, given that we wanted a very soft light in the atrium..and it reminds me of someone who used to work with us.

Notice also the demarcation of the black granite floor at the bottom of the escalators to denote and signal the entrance facing Jalan Ampang.

The boutique stores on the ground levels boasts 5m high shopfronts inside of the atrium, with strategic vantage points of view from escalators and balconies within the mall.
